Victoria’s Secret & Co. (VS&Co) is making strides to diversify its supplier base by teaming up with minority-owned cotton farms in northern Alabama, like Bridgeforth Farms. This move isn't just about business; it's about creating opportunities and acknowledging the struggles of Black farmers like the Bridgeforth family.
Bridgeforth Farms, now in its fifth generation of family ownership, has a rich history dating back to George Bridgeforth, who started the farm after the Civil War despite facing immense challenges as a formerly enslaved person. Today, Billy Bridgeforth and his family continue to run the 10,000-acre operation, growing various crops including cotton, corn, wheat, soybeans, and canola. Their story symbolizes resilience and determination in the face of systemic discrimination that has historically hindered Black farmers.
VS&Co recognizes the importance of supporting Black-owned farms like Bridgeforth Farms and is committed to breaking down barriers in the agriculture industry. By working directly with these farms, VS&Co aims to bring more economic opportunities to minority-owned farms and gain transparency into the cotton supply chain.
Dein Boyle, COO at VS&Co, emphasizes the company's dedication to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) in all aspects of its business, including its supplier base. Through direct-to-farm relationships, VS&Co is disrupting traditional industry practices, ensuring that more money goes back to the farmers who can then invest in their businesses.
But the collaboration doesn't stop there. VS&Co is investing in the future by partnering with Bridgeforth Farms on educational initiatives. They've committed to a three-year scholarship program for diverse students from Tuskegee University and Alabama A&M University, as well as a three-year internship program. These efforts, totaling a $150,000 investment, aim to empower the next generation of agriculture professionals and promote diversity in the field.
By partnering with farms like Bridgeforth Farms and investing in educational opportunities, Victoria’s Secret & Co. is not only diversifying its supplier base but also fostering a more inclusive and equitable future for agriculture.
