Minnesota Forecast: Highs in the 70s with a Chance of Cottonwood 'Snow

The weather in Minnesota can go from highs in the 70s to scattered showers and storms in the west, and if you live near a cottonwood tree, expect some “snow.”

Each year in late spring and early summer, cottonwood trees release thousands of tiny seeds attached to strands of “cotton” that float through the air like fluffy snowflakes.

This cotton is why the trees are called cottonwoods, and it can be both a delight and a nuisance.

For those with allergies, the floating cotton is problematic, often clogging air vents and air conditioning units. At dusk, it can make the world look like “The Upside Down” from “Stranger Things.” The Star Tribune even mentioned it confused a former NBA star visiting for the playoffs.
